Frequently Asked Question and Answers
September 2009

Why have the quarterly dues increased?  After several executive board meetings and numerous hours of discussion, the Pine Island Board of Directors presented a recommendation to increase dues by $25.00 per quarter at the annual membership meeting in June. The recommendation was approved by the majority of members present and voting. This increase in membership dues was required to meet our fiscal responsibility of maintaining the park in good condition and to eliminate a deficit in next year's operating budget. Listed below are a few of the reasons that make this increase necessary:

1. To offset the March 16th, 2009 rate increase by Northeast Oklahoma Rural Electric Coop.
2. The government's mandated minimum wage increase from $6.55 to $7.25 per hour effective July 24, 2009.
3. A requirement from the Oklahoma Dept. of Environmental Quality (DEQ) to discontinue producing our own water and switch to Delaware Rural Water District # 3 later this calendar year.  A move that will potentially increase our water expenses by 100%.

Even with the increase Pine Island remains one of the best recreational bargains available in the region for a cost of just $1.05 a day for membership.

Is Pine Island going to shut down? Like many businesses today, Pine Island RV Resort is struggling financially in these tough economic times. We are tightly monitoring our expenditure to insure that we maximize the value of how we spend our member's dollars, while continuing to make improvements to the park. To-date our improvements and advertising have paid dividends and increased our occupancy rate significantly over last year. Help us squash the rumor. There are no plans to shut down Pine Island!

What happens to my membership if Pine Island were to close? The final answer to this question would be determined by the legal system, but it is our best understanding that the current members in good standing would share equally in the proceeds from the sale of the park and its assets. With the buildings, more than 140 acres, 1-1/2 mils of shoreline, and no debt, Pine Island's saleable value is multi-millions of dollars.

How can we as members help to avoid or delay future increases in membership due?
1. By helping us increase the number of members and park occupancy. Word of mouth is by far the best way to advertise and get the message out about the beautiful facilities and amenities at Pine Island.
2. Help us reduce our expenses by conserving water. By conserving an average of approximately 100,000 gallons per month we can avoid the cost increase when we switch to Delaware Rural Water District #3.
3. Turn your air conditioner thermostat up at night or when you're away from your RV or motor home for extended periods.
4. Volunteering for four or more hours in the Teen Center will help us limit our paid hour's expense.

I've seen the SAVE OUR POOL signs around Pine Island. What's the deal?
The Health Department has informed us that the wooden deck around the indoor pool has to be removed and replaced with concrete. The estimate to tear out the old deck, add fill gravel, and replace it with concrete is nearly $12,000.00. Debbie Stout, Activities Director, has initiated several fund raising contests (Fast Track Raffle, Pine Island Cook Book, and Quilt Raffle) as well as requests for donations in order to raise the funds to replace the deck. You can help by participating in the fund raising contests or by including a donation when you pay your dues. The pool will be closing following the Labor Day holiday and we will begin tearing out the deck with our own labor in order to minimize the replacement cost.
